Overview of Contents:
The Parent's and Coach's Teaching Guide was developed specifically for teaching Minor and Youth
Hockey male and female players in house league programs or on Rep teams.
This Teaching Guide is considered most effective if used in conjunction with "Hockey Made Easy" –
Canada's Best Instruction Manual, but it can also be used as a stand-alone teaching tool.
It offers valuable Hockey Tips to help you teach basic skills and systems to your House League or
Travel Team Players so they can understand the objectives of the game and learn the skills required
to play hockey correctly and safely at a young age.
This 30 page, Teaching Guide contains reference pages to the Print, e-Book and CD versions of the
Hockey Made Easy Instruction Manual for your benefit and provides a specific teaching system and
presentation order as to what to teach, how to teach it, when to teach it, in five (5) laid out, 2- hour
teaching sessions, that can be taught either in a large hall setting, school classroom or gymnasium,
home recreation room or on the ice.
In the Parent's and Coaches Teaching Guide you will find:
An introduction to Teaching Hockey skills and systems to 5 to 12 year old hockey players, the preparation required for the Sessions, teaching locations, equipment required by the instructor, players equipment required, setting up the room, teaching sequences, followed by the specifics of the 5- Teaching Sessions.
Session 1:
Teaching Hockey using Shapes and Letters, the 2-objectives of Hockey, the 3- basic Rules of hockey and specific penalties: what they are, how to avoid them and the consequences if you receive one. Next comes
reviewing the 5-skill groups of hockey: skating, puck handling & stick handling, passing & receiving, shooting & scoring, and the 4 types of checking: stick checking, bodychecking, forechecking and backchecking.
When this is complete we discuss skates and specific skating skills, getting up from a fall, proper stick length, explain and demonstrate puck handling, puck control with puck handling drills, review of penalties, especially those new obstruction penalties that will be called starting in 2006/07, nutrition, hockey conditioning...
Session 2:
Brief Review of material covered in Session 1, also teaching mechanics of specific passing and receiving skills,
demonstrating 8-types of passes, explaining shooting, and the shooting mechanics for 6-types of shots...
Session 3:
Brief Review of material covered in Session 2, also show them how to score goals 6 different ways, explain
the secrets to scoring goals, the best shooting position and shooting angles to the net from the ice, the 5 best locations to score on the goalie, and demonstrate 9 valuable scoring plays ...
Session 4:
Brief Review of material covered in Session 3, also explaining positional play, the 3 forwards role, transition, position on a line, the 3 skills required to be a great line, rink zones, interchange positions, on ice balance, defencemens' role, defense pairing, net coverage, corner work, switching X changing positions, the 5-essential skills for defencemen, how to play odd and even man rushes, teaching 6-breakout/clearing plays...
Session 5:
Brief Review of material covered in Session 4, also defensive play, the purpose of checking, explaining the
4-categories of checking: stick checking, bodychecking, 2-forechecking systems, “ in your face puck pursuit” and “the neutral zone trap”, 2-backchecking systems, demonstrating goaltending skills, how to play the game…
Gymnasium Sessions:
Starting on Page 26 of this Guide there are instructions on how to run these Teaching sessions if using a large
gymnasium by combining the information from the classroom teaching sessions with the actual demonstration and practice sessions on the gymnasium floor by your players.
There is an overview of 5, 2- hour Gymnasium Teaching Sessions that can be expanded to more sessions if
you have the luxury of renting a gym for a longer period of time.
With a gym you have more time to explain a skill, demonstrate it, then have your players practice it. If you
have assistant coaches you can break the team into smaller groups and rotate them from station to station
every 10 to 15 minutes. You can give them feedback on their demonstrated skill or offer constructive suggestions on how to improve it.
There is also enough room to practice clearing/breakout plays, forechecking and backchecking systems,
power play and penalty killing strategies and last, but not least, enough floor space to end the session
with a ball hockey scrimmage. Players love to scrimmage and it will motivate them to return next week. How to order the Hockey Made Easy Teaching and Training Guide (if not purchasing the HME Manual)
